Former Republican sheriff candidate Trever Nehls of Fort Bend County, Texas announced Saturday his candidacy for the House seat being vacated by his twin brother, Rep. Troy Nehls.

Rep. Nehls, a MAGA Republican, announced his retirement from the House of Representatives in a Saturday post on X, noting he called President Donald Trump to tell him about the decision. Less than an hour after Rep. Nehls made the announcement, Trever Nehls announced his intent to seek the Republican nomination in a Facebook post.

“I am honored to announce my candidacy for Congressional District 22 to continue fighting for the people of this district,” Trever Nehls said. “I want to thank my brother for his decades of service in the military and in law enforcement where we served together. Troy has always led with integrity, courage, and a relentless commitment to public safety and he put our community first.”

Should Trever Nehls succeed his brother in Congress?

“District 22 needs a Representative who will follow in Troy’s footsteps and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with President Trump to defend our conservative values, secure the border, protect our families, and oppose the reckless and radical agenda that Democrats continue to press upon the American people,” Trever Nehls continued. “I’m ready to take up that fight. I know this district. And, this district knows me.”

Trever Nehls previously narrowly lost elections for Fort Bend County sheriff in 2020 and Fort Bend County judge in 2022, according to Ballotpedia. Trever Nehls previously served as Fort Bend County constable for Precinct 4.

“I will work every day to earn your trust and carry on the tradition of America First leadership that our outgoing Congressman Troy Nehls set,” Trever Nehls said in the Facebook post. “Your support is appreciated and I will strive to proudly represent you.”

Republican Reps. Wesley Hunt, Chip Roy, Morgan Luttrell, Jodey C. Arrington and Michael McCaul of Texas are also leaving the House of Representatives, Roll Call reported. Notably, Hunt is challenging Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn in the primary and Roy is seeking the Republican nomination for state attorney general. Luttrell, Arrington and McCaul are retiring.
