Three people were injured in a shooting near New York’s Times Square early Saturday morning, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).
The shooting happened around 1:20 a.m. ET at the intersection of West 44th Street and 7th Avenue, an NYPD spokesperson told Newsweek. The victims—an 18-year-old woman and two men, aged 19 and 65—were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where they remain in stable condition.
Police said a 17-year-old male was taken into custody after the incident. His name has not been released due to his age. According to NYPD, the shooting occurred after a “verbal dispute between two people escalated.”
Footage posted on social media showed chaos in Times Square as crowds ran and police moved to lock down the area. In the video, one person is seen being treated on the ground before being taken away on a stretcher while officers instructed bystanders to disperse. Newsweek could not independently verify the footage.
The incident comes less than two weeks after a mass shooting on July 28 left four people dead in New York City, including 36-year-old police officer Didarul Islam.
Authorities said Shane Devon Tamura, from Nevada, entered the lobby of a commercial office building at 345 Park Avenue, “spraying it with gunfire” and killing three people, including Islam. A woman and the shooter were later found dead in a hallway on the building’s 33rd floor.
Mayor Eric Adams said Tamura had been attempting to target the NFL headquarters—located in the same building—but took the wrong elevator.
New York-based journalist Kyle Mazza posted on X:
“Three people were shot in Times Square and tourists scattered the area following the gunfire in Manhattan, New York, on August 9, 2025. NYPD officers converged on the area and collected evidence. Detectives arrived on scene and police implemented several road closures in the area.
“The shooting took place Saturday morning at approximately 1:20 AM. An 18-year-old female, 19-year-old male and a 65-year-old male were shot and the victims were transported by ems to a local area hospital. A suspect was placed into custody. The area has since been reopened.”
Police said they will continue investigating the early morning shooting and that criminal charges are likely to follow.
