The “blackout” comes more than a week after George Floyd died while in police custody in Minneapolis after a police officer pinned him to the ground by placing his knee on Floyd’s neck.
To show their solidarity and participate in the blackout, users shared a black square on the feeds and committed to not post for the rest of the day.
Speaking on Monday, Floyd’s brother Terrence encouraged protesters to refrain from violence, as IJR reported.
“Let’s switch it up, do this peacefully … please,” he urged people who attended a memorial for his brother.
“I know he would not want y’all to be doing this,” Terrence said of the violent demonstrations.
