A quiet Turlock neighborhood is reeling after a tragic house fire revealed a horrifying allegation: a two-year-old boy was allegedly being tortured by his own uncle before dying in the blaze.
According to the New York Post, the fire broke out on Wednesday morning on Expedition Street, and emergency responders discovered the toddler’s body inside.
Authorities say the boy’s uncle, 29-year-old Richard Regalado, deliberately set the fire while babysitting.
Regalado was arraigned Friday in Stanislaus County Superior Court, facing multiple felony charges, including murder, arson, and torture. He is being held without bail and is expected back in court in May.
“It’s been probably one of the most horrible cases in this county we’ve had in a long time, just in nature,” said Stanislaus County prosecutor Vita Palazuelos.
Palazuelos added that the case has shaken the community and called on the public to respect the family’s privacy.
“Our heart goes out to the victim’s family, and I just ask that the public give them privacy and space to grieve,” she said.
Investigators said Regalado intentionally set the fire, making it one of the most disturbing cases they’ve handled in recent memory.
“The family is going through a lot. And those questions will be answered eventually in the court process as we move forward,” Palazuelos added.
Neighbors described their normally peaceful street as stunned by grief and disbelief, struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.
Authorities also noted this is the second serious child torture investigation in Stanislaus County in the past week, heightening concern across the community.
A GoFundMe has been set up to assist the boy’s family. “Hello, many of you asked to give and we appreciate it so much. Let us join together and support the Regalado family as they grieve the loss of their son/brother,” the organizer wrote.
“We appreciate the love and support and ask for privacy in this difficult time. Thank you in advance for all the support, love, prayers, and donations,” they added.
The case continues to develop as authorities investigate the full circumstances surrounding the fire and the alleged abuse.
