Republicans nominated House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) to be the next Speaker of the House on Tuesday.
Emmer’s nomination came as Republicans voted by secret ballot for about three hours. Voting consisted of five rounds in which GOP members picked a candidate, with the member with the lowest numbers being eliminated.
The nomination of Emmer makes him the third Republican lawmaker to seek the position of Speaker of the House since eight Republicans joined with Democrats to remove Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from his position.
Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) was removed after the first round of voting, followed by Rep. Jack Bergman (R-Mich.), who was removed after the second round of voting; Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga.) was removed after the third round of voting. Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) was removed after the fourth round of voting, while Rep. Bryon Donalds (R-Fla.) dropped out.
The fifth round of voting consisted of Emmer and Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.).
House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan lost a third round of voting on Friday after he received 194 votes and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) received 210 votes. Both failed to receive the necessary 217 votes.
