Tropical Storm Erin formed Monday in the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean, just west of the Cabo Verde Islands, as Hurricane Henriette strengthened in the Pacific Ocean well away from Hawaii, forecasters said.

There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect for either storm, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said, but Erin could become the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season this week, according to the Associated Press.

Erin was about 280 miles (451 kilometers) west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (72 kph), the NHC said. It was moving west at about 20 mph (32 kph). Gradual strengthening was forecast over the next several days.

Hurricane Henriette was a Category 1 storm on Monday, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (137 kph), the NHC said. It was about 525 miles (845 kilometers) northwest of Honolulu. Additional strengthening was possible Monday, with weakening expected over the next few days.

Also in the Pacific, remnants of former Tropical Storm Ivo degenerated on Monday, the NHC said. They were about 615 miles (990 kilometers) west of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula of Mexico, with no threat to land.

#BREAKING: Tropical Storm #Erin has formed in the Atlantic, 5th named storm of the 2025 Atlantic Season and could even become the first major hurricane too. Track is discussed below, here are some thoughts as of Monday:

Hurricane models show Erin becoming a major hurricane this weekend, could affect Bahamas & Bermuda, but consensus for now steers away from USA recurving NE over N Atlantic & may head towards UK for BH weekend! pic.twitter.com/hCsULkPgTN
