Trump Admin Explores Old Controversy With New Statue

TO GO WITH STORY by Karin ZEITVOGEL, Lifestyle-US-holiday-Columbus A 06 October 2007 photo shows the statue of Christopher Columbus at Columbus Circle in front of Union Station in Washington, DC. The statue was dedicated to Columbus 08 June 1912. Every year since 1934, people in the United States have celebrated the day in October 1492 when Christopher Columbus "discovered" America. "The celebration has taken on a life of its own to the point that 36 years ago, Columbus Day became a legal public holiday," Salvatore Zizza, president of the National Italian-American Foundation, said. There is a new statue of Christopher Columbus on the White House campus to the delight of the Trump administration and to the chagrin of others.

The likeness of Columbus was donated by the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations, per a letter from President Donald Trump thanking the group for the gift.

A replica of a Christopher Columbus statue has been placed on the grounds of the White House, part of the Trump administration’s latest effort to recognize the explorer they call a “hero.” Read more: https://t.co/v2RuYiPTCL pic.twitter.com/n5SCsJlFJe

The president hailed the Italian explorer as “one of the most gallant and visionary men to ever walk the face of the Earth.”

Columbus became a polarizing figure in 2020 when there was civil unrest lsparked by the murder of George Floyd, a Black man, by a white Minneapolis police officer.

Columbus’ Spanish-funded voyages from the 1490s onward paved the way for Europe’s conquests of the Americas. This is something activists say should not be celebrated.

Trump wrote in his letter the statue installed outside the Eisenhower Executive Office Building is a replica of a sculpture that “anti-American rioters” tore down in Baltimore, Maryland, in July 2020 and dumped in the harbor.

Should the new Columbus statue be celebrated on the White House campus?

“In this White House, Christopher Columbus is a hero. And he will continue to be honored as such by President Trump,” White House spokesman Davis Ingle said Sunday.

The Trump administration has dismantled slavery exhibits and restored Confederate statues.

These are moves that civil rights advocates say could reverse decades of social progress.

The guy who "discovered" something that was already here and inhabited. Figures.

Can’t wait for it to be torn down.

Trump installed a statute of Christopher Columbus on the White House grounds. Pedophiles always idolize other pedophiles. Columbus was the Epstein of his time.

His own people in his own time disagree with your take. “Christopher Columbus was imprisoned in 1500 and stripped of his governorship due to widespread complaints of tyranny, mismanagement, and brutality against both Indigenous populations and Spanish settlers in Hispaniola.”
