The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has launched an investigation into the city of Boston over alleged housing discrimination.

HUD alleged in a Thursday letter sent to Democratic Boston Mayor Michelle Wu that the city is aiming to “implement discriminatory housing policies in violation of the Fair Housing Act.” The letter also claimed that Boston “has been very public about its intention to discriminate on the basis of race, while essentially claiming that social justice and racial equity concerns purify its intentions.”

“We believe the City of Boston has engaged in a social engineering project that intentionally advances discriminatory housing policies driven by an ideological commitment to DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion] rather than merit or need,” HUD Secretary Scott Turner said in a Thursday statement. “HUD is committed to protecting every American’s civil rights and will thoroughly investigate the City’s stated goal of ‘integrating racial equity into every layer of city government.’”

“This warped mentality will be fully exposed, and Boston will come into full compliance with federal anti-discrimination law,” Turner continued.

HUD’s letter also alleges that Boston city officials have “brazenly endorsed, outlined, and implemented a city-wide system for allocating scarce housing resources based on race, color and/or national origin.”

Should the HUD investigation into Boston's housing policies proceed?

“Boston will never abandon our commitment to fair and affordable housing, and we will defend our progress to keep Bostonians in their homes against these unhinged attacks from Washington,” a Boston city spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation in a statement.

The City of Boston’s website touts Wu’s administration as having created “more affordable housing and helped more families become homeowners than during any preceding 3-year period since 1998.” Between 2022 and 2024, Boston saw higher affordable housing production than in any preceding three-year period since 1998, with 5,455 income-restricted units either completed or under construction, the city’s website claims.

In October, President Donald Trump threatened relocating the 2026 World Cup matches in Boston if there are “unsafe conditions” in the city, and also blasted Wu’s leadership of the city as “not good.” In August, Wu vowed to resist Trump’s Department of Justice by protecting criminal illegal immigrants living in Boston.

Additionally, Wu has faced criticism this year following a spate of high-profile arrests and controversies involving Boston city officials.
