Though President Donald Trump did not win the Nobel Peace Prize, another organization started by the Nobel family honored his administration with an “official recognition” on Dec. 5.
Ed Russo, head of the White House Environmental Advisory Taskforce, delivered a speech on behalf of Trump at the Nobel Sustainability Trust’s (NST) Miami summit before receiving an “official recognition” from the group. The Switzerland-based organization differentiates itself from the more recognized Nobel prizes and emphasizes meeting United Nations climate goals that Trump has openly rejected.
“A highlight of the morning session was the Sustainability Award Ceremony, introduced by the NST Board of Directors. Ed Russo delivered a keynote speech on behalf of the President of the United States and received an official NST recognition,” an NST press release states.
Another press release noted that Russo’s speech “emphasized governmental commitment to sustainability and received a significant recognition from the NST.” The NST plans to host next year’s awards ceremony in Doha.
Although the press releases do not specify which actions were recognized, the NST notes that a “recipient of the Special Recognition in Biodiversity Medal, Mr. Ed Russo delivered a keynote speech on behalf of the President of the United States and received an official NST recognition.”
The Trump administration has repeatedly touted its environmental achievements. While Trump’s messaging surrounding energy policy tends to center on industrial production, his administration has worked on conservation issues, with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fighting to end the decades-old human health danger posed by the Mexican sewage crisis.
Other agencies, like the Department of the Interior (DOI) continue to emphasize conservation, despite the several corporate media outlets framing Trump’s rollback of Biden-era rules and cuts to green funding as harmful attacks on the environment.
Notably, Trump was also awarded a FIFA “Peace Prize” at the World Cup draw on Dec. 5.
