President Donald Trump has appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to lead the charge in bringing the World Expo back to the United States for the first time since 1962 — and he wants Miami to host it.
In a Thursday Truth Social post, Trump officially announced the United States’ bid to host the prestigious World Expo in 2035. The former president gave his full backing to Florida as the host state, calling Miami the ideal city for the massive global event.
“The great state of Florida has expressed strong interest in hosting the Expo in Miami, which I fully support,” Trump said. “Miami Expo 2035 can be the next big milestone in our new Golden Age of America.”
To steer the effort, Trump named Miami native Marco Rubio as chair of the Expo 2035 coordinating team. “I am appointing Miami native Secretary of State Marco Rubio to chair the efforts of coordinating and advancing this exciting opportunity to convene the world,” Trump wrote.

Rubio responded quickly on X, saying he was “honored” to be appointed. “The event is an incredible stage to showcase our nation’s Golden Age and American exceptionalism before the world,” Rubio said. “There is nothing quite like Miami hospitality and it would be a privilege to bring the World Expo back to the U.S. for the first time since 1962.”
World Expos — or International Registered Exhibitions — are large-scale global events designed to address major challenges and highlight innovation. The last event took place in Osaka, Japan in 2025, drawing nearly 30 million visitors. The next one is scheduled for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2030, under the theme “Foresight for Tomorrow.”
Trump emphasized that hosting the event would create jobs and stimulate economic growth. “In my first term as President, I fought hard to bring the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 LA Summer Olympics to the U.S.,” he said. “I now have the honor of hosting as the 47th President, plus America250, G20 Doral and the G7.”

The U.S. joins a competitive field. Egypt is already positioning itself to bid for the 2035 event, using its “new administrative capital” as a symbol of growth. South Korea, after losing its 2030 bid, is also eyeing a potential comeback.
Rubio’s new role adds yet another line to an already packed résumé, but it’s clear the stakes are high. Winning the Expo bid would mark a significant soft power victory for the U.S. on the global stage — and an economic win for Florida.
No official decision has been made yet by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), but Trump and Rubio appear ready to go all in. The World is watching.
