There was only one right answer when Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) fielded a question by former President Donald Trump during a town hall Thursday night in Detroit.
“How brilliant is Donald J. Trump?” the Republican nominee for president asked his running mate in a planned phone call during the town hall for undecided voters hosted by Chris Cuomo on NewsNation, as Mediaite reported.
After Vance, as well as the audience laughed, Cuomo interjected, “Take your time, think about it.”
Vance’s answer? “Of course.”
“Well, first of all, sir, this is supposed to be undecided voters. I would hope that I have your vote, of all people,” Vance said. “But here’s– first of all, sir, of course, you’re very brilliant. And we both agree. We both agree that it’s important to have smart people running the government.”
Vance continued to praise Trump for his “ability to relate to anybody in any environment.”
He added, “That’s the true brilliance of Donald J. Trump.”
Trump expressed his gratitude for Vance’s answer then asked about Vice President Kamala Harris’ intellect.
“That’s very nice, and I appreciate it,” Trump said. “Maybe I’ll ask a second one. I watched, believe it or not, CNN last night. And in watching it, I watched the town hall with Kamala. Let me ask you for a second [unintelligible] and it was not good. How brilliant is Kamala?”
That question was not so easily answered.
“That’s a very tough one, sir,” Vance said. “I’m supposed to say something–”
“Don’t say it,” Trump said.
Before ending the call, Trump claimed the Republican ticket is “leading by a landslide” in the polls.
