Greenland and Iceland have many similarities — both North Atlantic Nordic islands with Viking history. But that does not mean their names can be used interchangeably.
But that is just what President Donald Trump did in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, per Mediaite.
Trump said Iceland four times when he meant to say Greenland, the territory he is trying to acquire.
“I’m helping Europe, I am helping NATO, and until the last few days when I told them about Iceland, they loved me,” Trump said about NATO allies.
Trump said it again one minute later when he was attacking NATO.
“I don’t know that they’d be here for us,” Trump said. “They’re not there for us on Iceland, that I can tell you. I mean, our stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland. So Iceland’s already cost us a lot of money.”
Watch:
This is not the first time the president has made such a blunder.
On Tuesday Trump said, “Iceland, without tariffs, they wouldn’t even be talking to us about it. So we’ll see what happens.”
Trump also said in his speech that he would not use military force to acquire Greenland.
