President Donald Trump declared in a nearly-500-word Truth Social post Saturday that liberal comedian Bill Maher — known for frequently criticizing both him and the political left — is a “jerk” and “a highly overrated LIGHTWEIGHT.”
In the lengthy statement, the president lambasted Maher, accusing him of having a “severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome” and urging Republicans to stop admiring his frequent takedowns of leftism. Trump referred to a spring 2025 dinner he shared with the comic and host of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” at the White House, which he dismissed as a “total waste of time.”
“Bill Maher is a highly overrated LIGHTWEIGHT, and Republicans should stop using him to show how the Left is coming over our way — Our Base, the Greatest of All Time, laughs at your weakness when you do it!” Trump wrote in his post. “Bill continues to suffer from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS!), and there is nothing that will ever be done to cure him of this very serious disease.”
“T.V. Host Bill Maher asked to have dinner with me through one of his friends, also a friend of mine, and I agreed,” the president began his post, recounting the events of the meal which transpired nearly a year prior. “He [Maher] came into the famed Oval Office much different than I thought he would be. He was extremely nervous, had ZERO confidence in himself and, to soothe his nerves, immediately, within seconds, asked for a ‘Vodka Tonic.’”
Trump claimed in his post Maher told him during the dinner that he was “actually scared.”
“In one respect, it was somewhat endearing! Anyway, we had a great dinner, it was quick, easy, and he seemed to be a nice guy and, for his first show after our dinner, he was very respectful about our meeting,” the president added. “But with everything I have done in bringing our Country back from ‘OBLIVION,’ why wouldn’t he be?”
“But then I noticed his show started to devolve into the same old story — Very boring, ANTI TRUMP, no mention of the PERFECT Border, Lowest Crime in 125 years, the Mass Removal of Stone Cold Criminals, the 50,000 DOW, the 7,000 S&P (Both Highest Ever!), Least Number of Murders since 1900, Venezuela, “Midnight Hammer,” Soleimani DEAD, al-Baghdadi DEAD, Lowest Inflation in YEARS (1.2% for last three months!), the Rebuilding of our Military, Eight War Stoppages, and on, and on, and on!” Trump continued, listing a variety of accomplishments from his first and second terms in office.
“In any event, it was a total waste of time for me to have this jerk at the White House,” the president reflected.
Trump noted he reached his breaking point with Maher after the comedian had, on Friday’s episode of his show, blasted Trump’s Monday Truth Social post stating in part, “The first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup.”
The president clarified he made the statement as a joke to criticize Canada’s recent warming up to China apparently at the expense of its relationship with the U.S.
“Well, he [Maher] went on and on about the Hockey statement, like ‘What kind of a person would say such a foolish thing as this,’ as though I were being serious when I said it,” Trump wrote, referring to the Friday episode of Maher’s show. “Fortunately, his Television Ratings are so low that nobody will learn about his various Fake News statements about me. He is no different than Kimmel, Fallon, or Colbert but, I must admit, slightly more talented!”
“Maher asked me if he could come back to the White House again and, with his friend, also asked to come to the wonderful White House Christmas Party, but he didn’t,” the president added. “Regardless, I’d much rather spend my time MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN than wasting it on him.”
“Thank you for your attention to this minor matter!” Trump concluded his post, using a variation of his iconic closing phrase from social media.
Neither the White House nor a contact listed for “Real Time with Bill Maher” immediately responded to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s requests for comment.
While a prominent opponent of the far left, Maher has long maintained he votes largely Democratic. He backed Vice President Kamala Harris over Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
Maher took several jabs at Trump and his supporters during his show’s Friday episode beyond the one the president called out in his post.
“A lot of conservative America is very butt-hurt these days. They’re still recovering from the halftime show,” the comedian said during his opening monologue, referring to Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl LX performance, which Trump had denounced in a game day Truth Social post as “absolutely terrible.”
Maher also alluded to Trump being mentioned in the Epstein Files, made jokes about Trump’s age, and Attorney General Pam Bondi during the same episode.
