During President Donald Trump’s record-breaking 1 hour and 47 minute State of the Union address, Sen. Elizabeth Warren — one of his fiercest and most consistent critics — stood up and applauded.
Yes, that Elizabeth Warren.
The Massachusetts Democrat, widely regarded as a progressive icon and frequent Trump antagonist, rose to her feet when the president called on Congress to pass the Stop Insider Trading Act. The moment immediately caught attention inside the chamber and across social media.
“As we ensure that all Americans can profit from a rising stock market, let’s also ensure that members of Congress cannot corruptly profit using inside information,” Trump declared. “Pass the Stop Insider Trading Act without delay.”
Warren has long supported legislation aimed at banning members of Congress from trading individual stocks, making Trump’s call one of the rare areas of overlap between the two political heavyweights.
The proposed legislation would bar lawmakers, as well as their spouses and dependent children, from purchasing publicly traded stocks. It would also require a seven-day public notice before selling off any stock holdings.
When Warren stood and clapped, other Democrats joined her — a striking contrast to much of the evening, which featured visible tension and minimal applause from the left side of the chamber.
“They stood up for that — I can’t believe it,” Trump quipped from the podium. “Did Nancy Pelosi stand up for that?”
“Doubt it,” he added.
The contrast speaks volumes.
Trump’s SOTU resembles a personal tantrum, as he rambles about a nonexistent ‘third term’ like a wannabe dictator and promotes division.

The camera soon found former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who remained seated and appeared visibly displeased. Pelosi, whose husband’s stock trades have long drawn scrutiny from Republicans, has faced repeated criticism over the years regarding congressional trading practices. According to Quiver Quantitative, Pelosi’s net worth exceeds $269 million, placing her among the wealthiest members of Congress.
Trump’s swipe at Pelosi added another chapter to their long-running feud. In 2020, then-Speaker Pelosi famously tore up Trump’s State of the Union speech on live television, a moment that became symbolic of the bitter divide between the two.
Despite the tension, Trump did receive occasional applause from Democrats throughout the night. Warren was also seen standing after Trump declared that Iran must never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
Still, the broader mood among Democrats was far from celebratory. Several lawmakers interrupted the speech. Rep. Al Green was ejected for the second consecutive year after waving a sign that read, “Black People Aren’t Apes!” referencing a recent controversy involving the president’s social media posts. Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib also left the chamber early after repeatedly heckling Trump.
For most of the night, Democrats remained seated, many visibly frustrated. But for one brief, headline-grabbing moment, Elizabeth Warren and Donald Trump found themselves on the same side of an issue — and the image of her standing ovation quickly became one of the defining visuals of the evening.
