Former President Donald Trump is maintaining a lead over President Joe Biden even amid his criminal trial in New York City.
A CNN poll conducted by SSRS released on Sunday found Trump receives 49% support in a head-to-head race against Biden, who receives 43% support.
And support for a potential return to the White House for the former president appears to be holding steady, views of his presidency appear to be improving.
According to the CNN poll, 55% of registered voters said they see Trump’s presidency as a success.
By contrast, 44% of respondents saw it as a failure.
The outlet noted shortly before he left office in 2021, 55% of respondents said they saw his time in office as a failure.
Meanwhile, 61% of voters told CNN they see Biden’s presidency as a failure while 39% called it a success.
That represents a worsening situation for the incumbent as 57% of respondents in 2022 called the first year of his presidency a failure.
CNN notes, “Negative views of Biden’s work in office have held for much of his presidency. In the new poll, 60% disapprove of his handling of the job and 40% approve, about the same as it’s been in CNN polling for more than a year. Even Biden’s strongest issue approval ratings in the poll are also in negative territory, with 45% approving of his handling of health care policy and 44% approving his handling of student loan debt.”
“And his worst issue approval rating – for his handling of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza – yields 28% approval to 71% disapproval, including an 81% disapproval mark among those younger than 35 and majority disapproval among Democrats (53%),” it added.
The poll also found 58% of voters have an unfavorable view of Biden, while 55% say the same of Trump.
It also found Biden trails Trump among voters under 35 by 51%-40%.
Additionally, 52% of all voters aid there was no chance they would vote for Biden, while 47% said the same of Trump.
