Former President Donald Trump isn’t mincing words about a brewing international deal that could put one of America’s most strategic military assets at risk — and he’s calling out a top U.S. ally in the process.

In a Tuesday post on Truth Social, Trump blasted the United Kingdom for its plan to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands — including the vital Diego Garcia military base — to the island nation of Mauritius. “Shockingly, our ‘brilliant’ NATO Ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia… FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER,” Trump wrote. “There is no doubt that China and Russia have noticed this act of total weakness.”

Things in global geopolitics just got even more serious. The move, which would see Britain formally end decades of sovereignty over the islands, has stirred alarm among national security experts who say this is more than a diplomatic gesture — it’s a major shift with potential military consequences.

The U.S. has operated a massive military installation on Diego Garcia since 1966. Today, the island houses around 2,500 personnel and serves as a critical launch point for long-range bombers, surveillance operations, and naval power projection stretching across the Middle East, Indo-Pacific, and Africa. If that control becomes uncertain, so does the Pentagon’s edge in the region.

John Hemmings, director of the National Security Center at the Henry Jackson Society, described the shift as part of a “new Trump Doctrine.” Speaking to Fox News Digital, he said the move is closely linked to Trump’s ongoing push to acquire Greenland — another strategic chess piece in his broader national security strategy. “These moves are linked… Diego Garcia is a potential threat to Beijing’s strategy to control vital shipping lanes,” Hemmings said, noting the enormous volume of oil — nearly 24 million barrels daily — that transits the Indian Ocean.

Should the U.S. oppose the UK's handover of Diego Garcia to Mauritius?

Mauritius, backed by a 2019 International Court of Justice ruling, claims the islands were unlawfully separated during decolonization. The U.K. has since agreed to transfer sovereignty while maintaining a 99-year lease for the base, supposedly guaranteeing uninterrupted U.S. access for at least a century — at a steep price of $160 million per year.

But Trump and his allies aren’t buying it.

“If Mauritius were to offer the islands to China after taking de jure control, it would put immense pressure on the U.S. in the eyes of international public opinion,” Hemmings warned. The lease could be renegotiated — or revoked. And the possibility of China gaining a foothold in the Indian Ocean, via fishing fleets or surveillance operations, can’t be ignored.

In a second post, Trump made his position crystal clear. “The U.K. giving away extremely important land is an act of GREAT STUPIDITY,” he wrote, tying the Chagos handoff to his long-standing calls to secure Greenland for the U.S. “Another in a very long line of national security reasons why Greenland has to be acquired.”

Right now, the Pentagon says Diego Garcia remains secure. But as Trump made clear this week, the future of the base — and America’s reach across half the globe — could be hanging by a diplomatic thread.
