President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will appoint Fox’s Judge Jeanine Pirro as the interim U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., according to a Truth Social post.
Reports of Pirro’s potential nomination began circulating online earlier Thursday after Trump told reporters in the Oval Office he would pull Ed Martin from consideration following Republican North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis’ refusal to support him. In his post, Trump highlighted Pirro’s background as a former assistant district attorney, county judge, and district attorney in New York, in addition to her time at Fox News.
“During her time in office, Jeanine was a powerful crusader for victims of crime. Her establishment of the Domestic Violence Bureau in her Prosecutor’s Office was the first in the Nation. She excelled in all ways,” Trump wrote.
“Jeanine is incredibly well qualified for this position and is considered one of the Top District Attorneys in the History of the State of New York,” Trump added. “She is in a class by herself. Congratulations Jeanine!”
While addressing Martin’s withdrawal, Trump told Daily Caller White House Correspondent Reagan Reese that Martin may potentially be moved to a position within the Department of Justice.
Pirro isn’t the first Fox personality tapped by Trump to serve in his second administration. Following his November 2024 election win, the president named former Fox News host and veteran Pete Hegseth as his pick for secretary of defense.
Piro, currently a panel member on Fox’s “The Five,” previously hosted “Justice with Judge Jeanine,” which began in 2011 and ran for 10 seasons. In addition to having written a handful of books and being a No. 1 New York Times best-selling author, she also won a Daytime Emmy for her Warner Bros. daily syndicated court show “Judge Pirro.”
Prior to her television work, Pirro became the first female to prosecute a murder case for Westchester County, N.Y. as an assistant district attorney. She made history again in 1993, becoming the first woman elected as district attorney in Westchester County.
With a spotless conviction rate, Pirro was re-elected as district attorney in both 1997 and 2001 . She went on to become the first female president of the District Attorney’s Association of the State of New York.
By 2006, Pirro was chosen by the GOP as their candidate for New York state attorney general.
Pirro has yet to make a public statement about the nomination.
