President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday afternoon that again delayed the implementation of tariffs on Chinese goods for an extra 90 days.

The president signed the order hours before the tariffs were to take effect, according to CNBC. The tariffs come as both sides have met numerous times in the past few weeks to discuss a deal on trade before the deadline.

The White House did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Trump announced his “Liberation Day” reciprocal tariffs on Apr. 2, which increased tariffs on Chinese imports to 54%. This led to heightened tensions between the two countries, with both countries raising tariff rates against each other.

China and the U.S. agreed to a 90-day pause on high reciprocal tariffs in May. Officials from both countries met in Geneva that month and agreed to lower reciprocal tariffs. China agreed to lower its tariffs on American imports to 10% while the U.S. agreed to reduce tariffs on Chinese goods to 30%.

The president’s decision to push back the tariffs on Chinese goods also follows Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng late July in Sweden. Those talks were the third time the two had met in three months, with other talks taking place in Geneva and producing tentative agreements to ease tariff tensions.

While the president has not reached a final agreement with China, President Trump has made trade deals with Japan and the European Union. In late July, Trump announced Japanese plans to invest $550 billion into the U.S. while announcing that the E.U. would not impose any tariffs on U.S. goods.
