The one-time president-vice president duo met for the first time Thursday for the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter.
Onlookers believe this is the first time President-elect Donald Trump and his former Vice President Mike Pence have met since January 2021 — shortly after the Jan. 6 riot where rioters chanted “Hang Mike Pence!” per Mediaite.
The two stood face-to-face and shook hands minutes before Carter’s state funeral was to begin at the National Cathedral.
“We see President-elect Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at the National Cathedral right now,” CNN’s Jake Tapper reported on the events. “We have seen I think this is the first president that we’ve seen come into the room. We are still waiting, of course, for Bush and Clinton and Obama as well. There is Donald Trump and Mike Pence. Al Gore, the former Vice President Pence and Trump.”
“It’s the first time they have seen each other since January 2021,” Tapper said. “A lot of tension between the two men and it didn’t look particularly warm just now.”
