President Donald Trump is reportedly giving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu one more chance to end the war in Gaza or risk a public rift with the White House, Axios reported Monday.
Trump and Netanyahu are reportedly close to agreement on a ceasefire deal, but advisers close to the president told Axios that the White House is prepared to put the blame on Israel if Israel decides to reject the deal and continue fighting. While the Arab states are reportedly in agreement over the proposed deal, Hamas will still have to sign off.
“The Arabs have agreed to it like 100%. Now we’re waiting for the president to work his magic on Netanyahu,” the adviser told Axios.
Netanyahu has reportedly tested Trump’s patience as he continues to prosecute his war in Gaza, with a recent failed assassination attempt on Hamas officials in Qatar inflaming tensions to new heights between the world leaders. The strikes only killed five Hamas members and one Qatari security officer, failing to neutralize any of the terrorist organization’s top leaders.
“Everyone — and I mean everyone — is exasperated with Bibi,” one administration official familiar with the peace negotiations told Axios.
One senior White House official told Axios that he suspects that Netanyahu is resorting to more reckless and destabilizing actions to garner political support, noting that he was “obviously very worried” about his pending corruption trial. Trump advisers have also said that Netanyahu has a “bizarre obsession” with U.S. social media discourse surrounding his nation.
Israeli forces began moving into Gaza City this month and urging residents to evacuate. Aid groups have warned that evacuating Gaza City’s nearly one million residents could worsen the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
The Trump White House has expressed worries about the ongoing starvation in the region, urging Netanyahu to do more to ensure Gaza’s civilians are properly cared for.
The White House did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
