President Donald Trump is revealing the candidate he believes would be the best running mate for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.
In an interview with the New York Post, Trump thinks Biden “owes” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) the vice president spot. The president credited a lot of Biden’s Democratic primary success to the Massachusetts senator.
According to Trump, Warren’s refusal to drop out of the primary race is the reason why Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) fell short on Super Tuesday.
“I think Elizabeth Warren is responsible for Joe Biden’s win because she didn’t drop out and [Vermont Sen.] Bernie [Sanders] would have won every single state on Super Tuesday,” Trump said.
He continued, “I think he should pick Elizabeth Warren because Elizabeth Warren, more than any other person, including [South Carolina Rep.] Jim Clyburn and including anybody you can name, is responsible for the win of Joe Biden.”
Despite mocking Warren for her previous heritage debacle, Trump still admits he believes she is the best candidate for the position.
“She was responsible for his win, so, therefore, I think he owes an obligation to pick Pocahontas,” Trump said.
Although Trump is seemingly blaming Warren for Sanders’ loss, he is not the only one who believes she is the best candidate for the job.
Trump’s remarks about Warren follow the release of CBS News poll results that also indicate Democratic voters are in favor of Warren, as previously reported on IJR.
Out of all of the rumored, prospective vice president candidates — including former Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) — the poll shows 71% of registered Democratic voters believe Biden should strongly consider Warren for vice president.
The poll also included a number of important leadership qualities Democrats believe the vice president must possess. One of the qualities includes the readiness to step into the role of President of the United States if there comes a time when Biden cannot lead.
Voters who were polled believe Warren is the right Democrat for the job. Although a vice presidential candidate vetting team has been created, Biden has not announced his running mate yet.
