An unlikely meeting will take place at the White House between President Donald Trump and newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
This will be the first meeting of the Republican President and Democratic socialist mayor-elect, according to Politico.
Trump announced the meeting Wednesday night with a post on Truth Social.
“Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran “Kwame” Mamdani, has asked for a meeting. We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st,” Trump posted.
“Further details to follow!” the president added.
Trump campaigned for Mamdani’s opponent, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He also has attacked Mamdani publicly.
Dora Pekec, Mamdani’s spokesperson Dora Pekec, said the two would discuss public safety, economic security and “the affordability agenda that over one million New Yorkers voted for just two weeks ago.”
Mamdani told reporters Monday that he reached out to the White House about a possible meeting.
The issue of affordability is a top priority for Mamdani as that was the central point of his campaign.
On Friday, he appeared on MS NOW where he said he plans to remind Trump of his pledge to lower costs.
“I want to just speak plainly to the president about what it means to actually stand up for New Yorkers, and the way in which New Yorkers are struggling to afford this city,” Mamdani said.
Another issue before Mamdani is he needs top-level security clearance before taking office. However, Trump has been known to restrict security clearances of political opponents.
