Trump Says ‘This Is an Assault on America’ As Hush Money Trial Begins

Former US President Donald Trump attends the first day of his trial for allegedly covering up hush money payments linked to extramarital affairs, at Manhattan Criminal Court in New York City on April 15, 2024. Donald Trump is in court Monday as the first US ex-president ever to be criminally prosecuted, a seismic moment for the United States as the presumptive Republican nominee campaigns to re-take the White House. The scandal-plagued 77-year-old is accused of falsifying business records in a scheme to cover up an alleged sexual encounter with adult film actress Stormy Daniels to shield his 2016 election campaign from adverse publicity. Former President Donald Trump declared “an assault on America” was happening.

Arriving at Manhattan Criminal Court on Monday morning, Trump told reporters: “This is an assault on America! Nothing like this has ever happened before. There’s never been anything like it.”

He continued: “Every legal scholar says this case is nonsense, it never have been brought. There has never been anything like this. There is no case… People that don’t necessarily like Donald Trump say they is an outrage this case was brought.

Trump added:

“This is political persecution, a persecution like never before. Nobody has ever seen anything like it. And again it is a case that should have never been brought. It is an assault on America. And that’s why I’m very proud to be here. This is an assault on our country. It’s a country that’s failing. It’s country that’s run by an incompetent man very much involved in this case. This is really an attack on a political opponent. That’s all it is. So I’m very honored to be here, thank you very much.”

Monday was the start of the hush money case against Trump, beginning with jury selection.

As NBC News writes, “The charges from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg stem from a $130,000 payment Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels at the end of the 2016 election to keep her from going public with an allegation that she and Trump had had an affair. Trump then repaid Cohen in installments marked as legal fees in company records.”

Trump is facing 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, which he has pleaded not guilty to.

This is the first time a former U.S. president has been faced with a criminal trial.
