President Donald Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act over what has been happening in Minnesota.
Trump made his announcement on Truth Social Thursday morning, stating he would invoke the act if the “corrupt politicians of Minnesota” fail to “stop” widespread and ongoing ICE protests, per Mediaite
.
On Wednesday night, Gov. Tim Walz demanded the administration remove the ICE agents from the state.
On a primetime address, Walz accused the federal government of letting loose “chaos and disruption and trauma” on local communities on Minnesota. About 800 Customs and Border Protection agents have been deployed to the Minneapolis area, which has resulted in protests.
Trump took to his social media platform to issue the warning.
“If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State,” Trump wrote, adding, “Thank you for you attention to this matter! President DJT”
Trump’s threat follows an ICE agent being shot on the leg by an alleged undocumented immigrant.
The agent was attempting to arrest the individual who reportedly resisted and “violently assaulted the officer,” per Department of Homeland Security. Both have been hospitalized.
Federal officers deployed tear gas, pepper balls and flash bangs late Wednesday as protests against ongoing deportation operation occurred.
This followed a second ICE-involved shooting in the span of a week.
Last week, Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot when an ICE agent fired at her vehicle during an altercation.
