There is one thing Americans can count on with President Donald Trump — his tenacity to shake things up in government.
This time, Trump is calling on the Commerce Department to create a new census to count legal citizens.
The president made his intentions known Thursday morning with a post on social media.
“I have instructed our Department of Commerce to immediately begin work on a new and highly accurate CENSUS based on modern day facts and figures and, importantly, using the results and information gained from the Presidential Election of 2024,” Trump wrote.
“People who are in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” he added.
The Hill reported this directive comes on the heels of Trump pushing for right-minded states to redraw congressional lines that would favor Republican candidates on the 2026 midterms.
Texas has recently been thrust into the spotlight after Trump said Republicans are “‘entitled’ to gain at least five House seats in next year’s election,” per the outlet.
The census is undertaken every 10 years to count every U.S. resident, according to the census website.
The numbers gleaned from the census then determines the number of seats each state has in the House of Representatives. It also determines what federal funding communities receive.
“The census tells us who we are and where we are going as a nation and helps our communities determine where to build everything from schools to supermarkets, and from homes to hospitals,” according to the Census Bureau.
