White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles admitted in an interview released Wednesday she didn’t know why Tesla CEO Elon Musk and President Donald Trump fell out.

Trump and Musk exchanged cheap shots via posts on their social media platforms in June stemming from Musk’s criticism of the reconciliation bill Trump signed into law Friday. New York Post reporter Miranda Devine asked Wiles on the “Pod Force One” podcast about Musk, who served as a special advisor until May 30.

“The president was very, very kind to him and, and Elon had so much to offer us. He knew things we didn’t know. He knew people and, and technologies that we didn’t know. He, it was, it was a great thing when it was a great thing,” Wiles said. “And, um, and, and had a very, I think, a very troublesome ending.”

“Why do you think that happened?” Devine asked Wiles, who responded, “I don’t know. I don’t understand it. I don’t know. I know that what has been said doesn’t ring accurate to me, but I don’t know. I enjoyed working with Elon. I think he’s a fascinating person and sees the world differently, and I think that’s probably what the president saw, too.”

Musk led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) after Trump established it in a Jan. 20 executive order. Wiles dismissed the notion that jealousy was involved in the end of the bromance between Trump and Musk.

“No, that doesn’t sound like Elon,” Wiles told Devine. “I don’t know. I don’t know.”

Musk and Trump clashed again as the reconciliation bill passed the Senate and eventually went to Trump’s desk for his signature, with Musk announcing the formation of  third party for disaffected fiscal conservatives. Trump took aim at the move in a Sunday post on Truth Social.

“I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks. He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States – The System seems not designed for them,” Trump posted. “The one thing Third Parties are good for is the creation of Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS, and we have enough of that with the Radical Left Democrats, who have lost their confidence and their minds!”

DOGE identified $190 billion in savings since Trump established it, an average of $1,180.12 per taxpayer, according to the organization’s website. The department lists the savings it has identified on its website, breaking it down into contracts, leases and grants. It also breaks down spending, while providing information on the federal workforce and government regulations.
