There will be another first in President Donald Trump’s second term in the White House.
The Treasury Department announced Thursday it will add Trump’ssignature to paper currency. This move is to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. It also marks the first time a sitting president’s signature will appear on currency.
“There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than U.S. dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement.
The Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) approved a $1 gold coin that featured Trump’s likeness in honor of the country’s 250th anniversary.
“Under President Trump’s leadership, we are on a path toward unprecedented economic growth, lasting dollar dominance, and fiscal strength and stability,” Bessent said.
Federal law has not allowed living people in the past from being depicted on U.S. currency.
A law signed by Trump at the end of his first administration — known as the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 — included new language regarding the semiquincentennial commemoration coins.
Trump’s name has appeared elsewhere, too.
The Institute of Peace was renamed Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace and the Kennedy Center is now the Trump Kennedy Center.
