Democratic pundit Van Jones criticized mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s fiery election-night speech Tuesday, saying the 34-year-old democratic socialist’s tone was sharply different from the calm demeanor he displayed on the campaign trail.

According to the New York Post, Jones said during CNN’s post-election coverage that Mamdani had “missed an opportunity” to show himself as calm, warm, and embracing and instead opted to begin an aggressive acceptance speech.

“I think his tone was sharp. I think he was using the microphone in a way that he was almost yelling. That’s not the Mamdani that we’ve seen on TikTok and the great interviews and stuff like that,” he added.

“I felt like it was a little bit of a character switch here,” Jones continued, describing the difference between the “warm, open, embracing guy” and the fiery mayor-elect seen Tuesday night.

Jones said Mamdani could have used the moment to reassure skeptical New Yorkers.

“There are a lot of people trying to figure out, ‘Can I get on this train with him or not? Is he going to include me? Is he going to be more of a class warrior even in office?’ I think he missed a chance tonight to open up and bring more people into the tent,” he said.

Did Zohran Mamdani's victory speech reflect a character change from his campaign persona?

“He’s very young and he just pulled off something very, very difficult. I wouldn’t write him off, but I think he missed an opportunity to open himself up tonight and I think that that will probably cost him going forward.”

Mamdani — who will be New York City’s first Muslim, first South Asian, and first socialist mayor — declared victory about two hours after polls closed.

“The conventional wisdom would tell you that I am far from the perfect candidate. I am young, despite my best efforts to grow older. I am Muslim. I am a democratic socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologize for any of this,” Mamdani said in his 20-minute address.

“New York, tonight you have delivered a mandate for change, a mandate for a new kind of politics, a mandate for a city that we can afford and a mandate for a government that delivers exactly that.”

According to the city’s Board of Elections, Mamdani won 50.4% of the vote to independent Andrew Cuomo’s 42%, with nearly 98% of precincts reporting at midnight.
