Vice President JD Vance didn’t waste a moment turning an awkward viral snapshot into comedy fodder, using a wave of online speculation as setup for a punchline only he could deliver.
According to the New York Post, the photo in question — undated, unverified, and viewed with skepticism by many — shows a man who looks like Vance seated across from his wife, Usha, in what appears to be a restaurant booth.
The expression on the man’s face is tense; the woman’s head is tilted down, her hand partly covering her face. The image quickly became fuel for critics eager to suggest turmoil in the couple’s marriage.
It didn’t take long for political opponents to push the narrative. One user who posted the picture on Facebook chimed in with, “Looks like things are not so good in Republicanistan.”
But alongside the snark came another line of commentary: uncertainty.
A number of users wondered whether the photo was actually real, with many pointing out odd visual cues that hinted at AI involvement.
Rather than issuing a denial or elevating the drama, Vance cut straight through the noise on Tuesday with a short, blisteringly dry response.
“I always wear an undershirt when I go out in public to have a fight loudly with my wife,” he wrote on X.
The vice president’s dig at the image — and at the frenzy surrounding it — arrived after weeks of gossip that had trailed him and his wife.
The chatter first intensified in October after Vance was photographed hugging Erika Kirk, the widow of late Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
Since then, online critics have circulated photos of Usha without her wedding ring during multiple public appearances with First Lady Melania Trump.
Her spokesperson attributed the missing ring to ordinary family life, explaining that the second lady “does a lot of dishes, gives lots of baths, and forgets her ring sometimes.”
Vance himself brushed off the speculation in an interview with NBC News last week, making it clear the rumors aren’t rattling the couple.
“We kind of get a kick out of it,” he said.
And if his latest quip is any indication, he’s still laughing.
