Vice President J.D. Vance didn’t hold back when a reporter pushed the narrative that Immigration and Customs Enforcement had arrested a five-year-old boy during an operation in Minnesota. The story quickly made headlines—until the facts came out.

The child, Liam Conejo Ramos, entered an ICE vehicle after his illegal alien father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, was detained outside their home. Vance, speaking at an economic event in Minneapolis, slammed the media’s framing of the incident.

“I actually saw this terrible story while I was coming to Minneapolis,” Vance said. “We just left Toledo, Ohio, this morning for an economic messaging event and I see this story. And I’m a father of a five-year-old actually, a five-year-old little boy, and I think to myself, ‘oh my god, this is terrible.’ How did we arrest a five-year-old? Well, I do a little bit more follow-up research and what I find is that the five-year-old was not arrested, that his dad was an illegal alien and then when they went to arrest his illegal alien father, the father ran.”

He continued, dismantling the viral headline with some good old-fashioned common sense: “Are they supposed to let a five-year-old child freeze to death? Are they not supposed to arrest an illegal alien in the United States of America?

If the argument is that you can’t arrest people who have violated laws because they have children then every single parent is going to be completely given immunity from ever being the subject of law enforcement. That doesn’t make any sense.”

The Department of Homeland Security backed him up. In a statement posted to X, DHS said, “ICE did NOT target a child. The child was ABANDONED.” The agency confirmed that the father ran off during the arrest, leaving his young son behind in the driveway. ICE agents ensured the boy’s safety while apprehending his father, who had illegally entered the U.S. from Ecuador and had been released under the Biden administration.

JD Vance went to Minneapolis to try to turn the temp down and handled himself very well..

A dumbass reported said ICE detained a 5-year old after preschool… JD did some digging and of course the MSM lied again.

Should media narratives about immigration arrests prioritize factual accuracy?

“Parents are asked if they want to be removed with their children, or ICE will place the children with a safe person the parent designates. This is consistent with past administration’s immigration enforcement,” DHS added.

Meanwhile, Columbia Heights school officials and the family’s attorney claimed that agents took the boy and his father to a detention facility in Texas, and the school district’s superintendent tried to stoke the controversy by saying ICE removed the child from a running vehicle.

But the bigger picture is clear: Vance wasn’t going to let the media twist a lawful arrest into another hit piece on immigration enforcement. In fact, the Trump administration recently deployed nearly 1,000 additional ICE agents to Minnesota to help restore order following rising anti-ICE sentiment—sentiment that only intensified after an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Good, who struck the agent with her car earlier this month. Vance’s message? The law still matters. And the days of weaponizing children for political spin are over.
