Hoover Institution senior fellow Victor Davis Hanson disclosed his disappointment with his recovery during a Thursday episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.”

Hanson has been recovering from a Dec. 30 operation to remove a cancerous tumor, during which he faced complications. He suggested on his Daily Signal show that he believed he should feel better six weeks following the operation and that he wished he could return to working full-time.

“Six weeks ago tonight, I got operated. And I think — I’m getting frustrated because I’m not feeling the way I should, I think … I lost, I don’t know, two or three liters and five transfusions,” Hanson said. “And that’s my problem right now. It’s not the surgery — I mean, it hurts, and I feel like there’s something missing down there. I wonder where it went. It’s kind of like a little black hole. You lose half of your lung.”

Should Victor Davis Hanson focus on recovery before returning to full-time work?

“And then to have AFib [atrial fibrillation] and kind of like an IED [improvised explosive device] — you go places, you never know when it’s going to go off,” he added. “And then the medicine for it is kind of bad. It wouldn’t be bad, but I have mast cell mastocytosis. So it kind of releases mast cells. So I just feel like I’m too wobbly. I can’t drive yet. I’d like to get back full-time to work … I really want to get back.”

Hanson recorded his first on-camera update about his health tribulations in a video for The Daily Signal’s “Victor Davis Hanson: In a Few Words” posted on Feb 5.

He said at the time that he remained “weak” and continued to have issues that could necessitate additional treatment. He had anticipated returning to producing video content three or four weeks after the surgery.

Hanson also shared in the Feb. 5 video that he was anemic and needed to increase his blood volume.

“I’m going to try to come back slowly and periodically, but I can’t predict when I will be here given these therapies that people are suggesting,” he said. “I haven’t made a decision yet. Depends on if I can get a little stronger.”
