A tense immigration operation in Evanston, Illinois, exploded into confrontation Wednesday as Mayor Daniel Biss stepped directly into a chaotic street scene, clashing face-to-face with Border Patrol Cmdr. Gregory Bovino, while protesters shouted, whistled, and crowded the roadway.
According to Fox News, the scene unfolded late Wednesday morning, near Green Bay Road and Dodge Avenue, after an 11-vehicle Border Patrol convoy moved in to detain individuals under Title 8 immigration authority.
Witnesses said at least two people were taken into custody as word spread and demonstrators began to form.
Among those who arrived was Biss — a progressive Democrat and congressional candidate — who cut through the crowd and walked straight toward Bovino. Video shared on X shows the mayor confronting the commander head-on as protesters shouted over the noise of whistles.
Biss didn’t hold back.
“The abuse has not been acceptable,” he said. “The racism has not been acceptable. The violence has not been acceptable.”
Bovino shot back:
“Yeah, that’s why we’re here in your community.”
From there, tempers climbed. Protesters yelled over one another, with one person repeatedly shouting, “Hey Bovino, we don’t want you here, bro! We don’t want you!”
As the crowd grew, protesters tried to block vehicles in the roadway. Officers from both Evanston and Chicago police departments moved in to help maintain space for federal vehicles to leave, while others directed traffic and formed a corridor around the convoy.
Biss later escalated his criticism online, calling the agents “masked thugs” and accusing Bovino of lying about the city.
“The only ‘violent mob’ in Evanston today was Greg Bovino and his masked thugs, terrorizing innocent people and then lying about our city to try and sow chaos,” Biss wrote.
He praised residents who “chased you out of town,” telling federal agents, “Don’t come back.”
Bovino disagreed sharply, framing the operation as a success and rejecting Biss’ description. He wrote that agents were in Evanston “to make his city a safer place through Title 8 immigration enforcement,” accusing the mayor of falling back into “divisive talking points.” He called the operation an “excellent day in Evanston.”
Title 8 grants federal immigration authorities broad power to conduct enforcement operations far from the border — something that has increasingly put federal agents in direct conflict with Democrat-led communities.
Wednesday’s confrontation underscored that divide, turning a routine enforcement stop into a heated showdown between federal authority and local leadership — all with cameras rolling.
