CNN anchor Jake Tapper confronted Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett on Tuesday for previously saying that Latinos who voted for President Donald Trump have “slave mentality.”
Crockett said in a Vanity Fair profile in December 2024 that this group of Latinos have a “slave mentality” and must hate themselves since Trump wants to deport illegal immigrants. During an interview on “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” Crockett denied saying they all have “slave mentality” and argued most of them likely do not support what Trump is doing.
“‘The immigration thing has always been something that has perplexed me about this community … It almost reminds me of what people would talk about when they would talk about kind of like slave mentality and the hate that some slaves would have for themselves. It’s almost like a slave mentality that they have. Now about the time that that was published last year, around a million Latino voters in Texas were voting for Trump,’” Crockett told Vanity Fair.Â
After reading the quote, Tapper pointed out that a record-high number of Latinos voted for Trump.
“Now about the time that that was published last year, around a million Latino voters in Texas were voting for Trump. Do they all have slave mentality?” Tapper asked.Â
“No, and that’s not what that said at all, to be clear. It did not say that every Latino has that type of mentality,” Crockett said. “No, no, but slave, the ones that vote for people who believe in strong or Trump’s immigration policy. So, so I don’t believe that the people that voted for Trump believe in what they’re actually getting.”Â

Trump achieved the highest share of the Latino vote ever recorded for a Republican nominee, winning approximately 46% to 48% in the 2024 election. He won the Latino male vote 54% to 44% against former Vice President Kamala Harris, according to an NBC News exit poll.
Crockett launched her Senate campaign on Monday and claimed she can flip Texas blue. The congresswoman will attempt to unseat Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who is running for reelection.
The senator-hopeful also stated on CNN that she does not need Trump voters to win the Senate seat.
