In a video posted to social media Thursday, United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain praised President Donald Trump after Trump announced tariffs on imported automobiles and auto parts.
Citing “national security concerns,” Trump imposed the 25% tariff Wednesday, which covers imported cars, SUVs, crossovers, minivans and light trucks, in addition to parts that include engines and transmissions.” Fain said Trump’s policy would address “unfair” laws regarding trade.
“We are ecstatic to see an administration finally address the unfair trade laws in this country,” Fain said. “These laws have destroyed the American working class. They’ve destroyed communities in this country, in virtually every state, for decades.”
WATCH:
Leaders of the United Auto Workers backed then-Vice President Kamala Harris for president last year, with Fain labeling Trump a “scab” during the Democratic National Convention. Many rank-and-file members of the union, though, backed Trump.
“I’ve watched this region go from the arsenal of democracy. Now, we’re happy if we can get a sports stadium or we‘re going to sell weed or fireworks or whatever. It‘s absolutely pathetic what we have sunk to now and our politicians just… they’re good with it. He [Trump] isn’t, so that’s the difference,” autoworker Chris Vitale told CNN reporter John King in June 2024, before then-President Joe Biden dropped his reelection bid.
The International Association of Fire Fighters, which endorsed Biden in the 2020 campaign, announced Oct. 3 it would not endorse a presidential candidate in the 2024 election, slightly over two weeks after the International Brotherhood of Teamsters said they would not endorse either Trump or Harris.
Trump received overwhelming support in electronic and phone surveys of the rank-and-file members of the Teamsters in 2024.
