MSNBC anchor Joe Scarborough appeared shell shocked Thursday as his wife, co-host Mika Brzezinski, informed him that butter costs $7 at the grocery store.
Scarborough said he spoke to a supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris who believed President-elect Donald Trump was going to win because butter costs $3, which he argued appeared to be a “reductive” point. Brzezinski interrupted her husband to add that butter actually costs $7 at the grocery store and agreed that groceries are too high.
“A few weeks ago, someone who was gonna be voting for Kamala Harris came up to me and said ‘oh my God, Trump’s gonna win.’ I said ‘why’s that’ and he goes, ‘I went to the grocery store, butter is over $3.’ I kinda laughed and I said ‘well that’s kind of reductive isn’t it?’ I said it to myself, to him I smiled and said ‘good point.’”
“$7,” Brzezinski interrupted. “I’m just saying, it’s $7.”

Scarborough, appearing confused, did not appear to believe that butter could possibly cost that much.
“What’s that? Butter is $7?” Scarborough asked, followed by Brzezinski confirming her previous statement. “What, is it framed in gold? Okay, anyway … Okay, well, anyway, my point is this Willie [Geist], the rent is too damn high and the guy was saying the cost of butter is way too damn high and so I thought it was a bit reductive, it ended up being just the point that if you look at the cost of groceries, if you look at the cost of gas, if you look at the cost of things compared to four years ago, it was a very simple answer for working class Americans. Things just cost too much.”
“Yeah, no question,” co-host Willie Geist said. “And $7 is an outrage for butter, I got to get you to my guy.”
Geist argued the most important issue for voters of all demographics was the economy and inflation, leading to Trump’s victory as they believed in his promise to bring down prices.
Trump consistently held a strong advantage on the economy in public polling ahead of the election. The former president held a 54% to 45% advantage on the economy in a Gallup poll released Oct. 9, while a CNBC poll conducted between Oct. 15-19 found Trump holding an 18-point lead on the economy.
Trump won the election early Wednesday and has secured 295 electoral votes at the time of writing, while Arizona and Nevada still have not been called.
The president-elect made historic inroads with black and Latino men, along with blue collar workers. A majority of Latino men, 55% to 43%, voted for Trump over Harris, while 21% of black men backed the president-elect, according to an NBC News exit poll.
