Radio host Charlamagne Tha God criticized “liberals” on Monday for rejoicing over President-elect Donald Trump’s sentencing in his New York criminal case.
Judge Juan Merchan sentenced Trump to an unconditional discharge on Friday, meaning he will face no fine, jail time or probation. Charlamagne, on “The Breakfast Club,” said that it is a “waste of time” to laud the fact that Trump is now officially a convicted felon because he was still elected to serve as president of the United States.

“What a waste of time. I mean, what a waste of time. Pure political theater. They was never, ever going to convict a former or sitting president of nothing,” Charlamagne said. “And what was even more ridiculous was watching liberals celebrate this. Like, this is not a win. Who cares if you can call him a convicted felon when you still got to call him president for the next four years? Who cares?”
A Manhattan jury convicted Trump in May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to a $130,000 non-disclosure payment to former porn actress Stormy Daniels. Trump repeatedly described the payment as a “legal expense” during his sentencing hearing, asserting he did not falsify business records and was “totally innocent.”
Trump posted on Truth Social Friday that he will appeal the case.
“The real Jury, the American People, have spoken, by Re-Electing me with an overwhelming MANDATE in one of the most consequential Elections in History. As the American People have seen, this ‘case’ had no crime, no damages, no proof, no facts, no Law, only a highly conflicted Judge, a star witness who is a disbarred, disgraced, serial perjurer, and criminal Election Interference,” he wrote. “Today’s event was a despicable charade, and now that it is over, we will appeal this Hoax, which has no merit, and restore the trust of Americans in our once great System of Justice. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Charlamagne also criticized Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis on Friday for her attempt to retrieve her election interference case against Trump by requesting that the Georgia Supreme Court reinstate her.
“They shouldn’t continue to seek the case. It’s a waste of time. They’re not going to do anything to him,” he said. “Nothing is going to happen. What is going to happen? There’s nothing going to happen. It’s just, it’s all political theater. It’s foolishness.”
CBS News legal contributor Caroline Polisi said Thursday that Willis’ attempt to get the case back after the Georgia Court of Appeals disqualified her in December is likely doomed to fail.
“I don’t think she has a good chance of winning,” Polisi said. “It’s a pretty well-known conservative court and they would have to overturn the appellate court. So I don’t see it working out for her.”
