About generation loss
Generation loss is the loss of quality between subsequent copies or transcodes of data. Compression, as well as up-scaling or up-sampling are common causes of generation loss. The introduction of compression artifacts may increase the entropy of the data through each generation. Other causes include signal noise in analog systems and conversion between analog and digital formats.
