New York Central and Hudson River Railroad 999 is a 4-4-0 "American" type steam locomotive built for the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad in 1893, which was intended to haul the road's Empire State Express train service. It was built for high speed and is alleged to be the first steam locomotive in the world to travel over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h), with at least one (questionable) source claiming it reached a maximum speed of 112.5 miles per hour (181.1 km/h).
