Hurricane Nolo rapidly strengthened to Category 3 over the Pacific west of Hawaii, prompting a tropical storm warning for part of the remote Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. Forecasters warned that surf could inundate low-lying atolls, but no populated islands were expected to be threatened; Nolo was headed west toward the International Date Line.
