Wetherspoon profits expected below market forecasts

J D Wetherspoon reported like-for-like sales growth of about 4% year-to-date, opened eight pubs and sold nine, and expanded its franchised estate to 23 while maintaining a roughly £720 million year-end net debt; however, chairman Tim Martin warned that full-year profits are likely to come in below market expectations due to weaker final-quarter sales and higher costs across food, labour, repairs, energy and business rates. The group has also continued capital discipline with significant share buybacks and investments in freehold reversions as it navigates margin pressures.
