Former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly and comedian Bill Maher engaged in a heated exchange Friday during the latter’s HBO show, “Real Time,” over the direction and viability of the modern Democratic Party.

The increasing shift within the Democratic Party toward socialist figures like Democratic New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani — who built his campaign on wealth redistribution, expansive government programs and class-based politics — reflects a broader ideological realignment within the party. O’Reilly and Maher sparred over the Democratic Party’s direction in the course of their conversation on the show.

“You’re disenchanted with the far-left wing of the Democratic Party, okay? Because you believe that it’s poisoned the well for everybody else, like the congressman [Moskowitz] here. Am I correct?” O’Reilly told Maher.

“Because they never met anything that was counterintuitive that they didn’t love,” Maher responded.

O’Reilly then said the Democratic Party had diluted its message by turning away from workers.

Is the modern Democratic Party moving away from its traditional worker-focused roots?

“Right, so they want to put trans people in here, and they want to do this. And it just dilutes the message that the Democratic Party has traditionally had, that ‘we’re for the workers, we want to improve the lives of the backbone of the country.’ Now you’re into all this fringe garbage that Americans don’t want. I think that’s your posture,” O’Reilly said to Maher.

“I wouldn’t put it that way, but go ahead,” Maher replied, to the audience’s amusement.

The exchange turned sharp when O’Reilly urged Maher to “rethink” his phrasing, prompting Maher to fire back with a jab about O’Reilly’s career.

“Okay, but you might want to rethink ’cause that’s a good way to put it,” O’Reilly said.

“Well, I’m still on the air and you’re not, but go ahead,” Maher retorted.

American historian and conservative political commentator Victor Davis Hanson previously argued the Democratic Party’s embrace of socialist figures like Mamdani marks an ideological break from its traditional roots. He said progressives such as Mamdani and Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez promote policies that punish initiative and promote dependency on government, a shift which risks alienating middle-class voters who once defined the party’s base.

Political analyst Matt Towery said Friday that Republicans are struggling to respond to that transformation. He pointed to weak GOP turnout in recent elections, including two statewide losses in Georgia, as evidence the party is losing ground while Democrats consolidate under their new identity.
