Democratic New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez instructed residents of all immigration statuses to register for free childcare in a Tuesday video.
Mamdani posted the video ahead of the Friday deadline for New Yorkers to enroll in the city’s pre-K and 3-K programs. The entire video was in Spanish, although it had subtitles with English translations.

“This is the last week for parents to sign up their kids for the 2026–2027 school year. So to make one last push, I decided to bring in a friend,” Mamdani said as Ocasio-Cortez entered the frame and greeted viewers in Spanish.
Mamdani joked that his Spanish was not strong before handing off to Ocasio-Cortez.
“If your child is turning three or four years old in 2026, you can enroll them in free 3-K or Pre-K in New York City,” she said. “But you must apply by February 27, which is the deadline. Any New York City parent, regardless of your occupation, income, or immigration status, is eligible to sign their child up.”
Mamdani announced the policy during a Jan. 23 roundtable discussion about the pre-K and 3-K programs, noting enrollment was open to all New Yorkers.
“This is one example of a city program that we are encouraging everyone to apply to, to see themselves as a part of and to know that we are going to use every single law that we have here to protect the health and safety of everyone who signs up,” Mamdani said at the time. “These are not programs that are going to ask the immigration status of any one of the children.”
The mayor also told New Yorkers how to obstruct Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in a Dec. 7 X post. He confirmed that he supported abolishing ICE on “The View” Jan. 20.
Moreover, Mamdani’s fiscal year 2027 budget proposal published on Feb. 17 designated an additional $1.2 billion for migrants coming to New York City, the New York Post reported.
