Former first lady Michelle Obama is looking to highlight stories of those who are new to taking on college and inspire other first-year college students, through the launch of “A Year of Firsts.”

Obama, who has 35.3 million followers on Instagram, posted a video via social media on Tuesday, where she announced the launch of a video series.

Citing that freshman year of college can be “exciting” while also “a little nerve-racking,” the former first lady describes her experience.

“As a first-generation college student myself, I know how intimidating it can be to try to navigate through a new place and make new friends, all while trying to figure out who you are and who you want to be,” Obama wrote in the caption.

The former first lady’s company Higher Ground Productions will be partnering with ATTN:, a digital media company, to kick off the video series, which will be run on Instagram’s IGTV. The series will highlight four college freshmen stories.

“Can’t wait for you all to meet them and learn more about what taking that leap really feels like, day in and day out,” Michelle Obama wrote on Instagram, adding, “Stay tuned!”

ATTN: co-founder Matthew Segal said in a statement about the series:

“As Mrs. Obama highlights in each episode, there are many hidden challenges to making it through college. This series will meet many students where they live — on Instagram — and share candid perspectives about how to overcome barriers. We’re thrilled to be partnering with Mrs. Obama and Reach Higher to engage and inspire students to invest in themselves through higher education.”

The video series is expected to kick off in mid-January and run six episodes through June.

As IJR previously reported, Michelle Obama was named the “most admired woman” of 2019, taking the title for the second consecutive year, according to Gallup.
