Republican lawyer George Conway blasted Senate Republicans for their handling of the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.

In an interview with CNN on Wednesday, Conway, he was “deeply saddened” by the way the Republican majority was handling the trial. He also said the trial is a “very specific day of reckoning” for the party.

“I’m deeply saddened. It’s very upsetting. And this is a moment of reckoning not just for the country, and for the rule of law, and for the Constitution. It’s a very specific day of reckoning for the Republican senators who took this oath — and the Republican Party generally.”

“Are they going to stand for lies Instead of truth? Are they going to stand for gaslighting instead of reality? Are they going to just do the bidding of this one man, and put his interests over those of the country?” Conway asked.

“It was just distressing to see a complete unwillingness of the Republican senators to vote for hearing evidence, vote for receiving evidence. There should’ve been no question about it,” Conway said, lamenting the news that the Senate rejected amendments to subpoena new witnesses and documents.

Additionally, Conway praised the House impeachment manager who shared “spectacular statistics” about the average number of witnesses that had been called during impeachment trials.

“The Clinton case was a little bit of an outlier,” Conway said, noting that the-independent counsel Ken Starr compiled evidence before the trial.

“Both sides decided they didn’t want too much of live testimony because of the salacious nature of it,” Conway said, noting, “That was a completely different circumstance. But even there they had witnesses. They took depositions.”

Additionally, he suggested that Republicans don’t want to call witnesses or ask for more documents because “they know [Trump’s] guilty.”

“What are they afraid of? They’re going to hear evidence that they don’t like? They must be afraid of something. That’s the thing that I find most disturbing about it, is they don’t want to hear the evidence because they know the truth. They know he’s guilty.”

For his part, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) called the impeachment effort a “crock” and said that calling witnesses and dragging the trial out would not be good for the country.
