An Arizona man who was arrested for allegedly leaving a voicemail at Rep. Adam Schiff’s (D-Calif.) office threatening to murder the congressman says that he was likely reacting to something he saw on Fox News, according to a recent court filing.

Jan Peter Meister allegedly made the phone call on October 1, 2019, and was indicted on October 23, 2019, on charges relating to the voicemail and for possession of illegal firearms.

A police summary of their interview with the suspect reads, “Meister responded that he watches Fox News and likely was upset at something that he saw on the news. He stated that he strongly dislikes the Democrats, and feels they are to blame for the country’s political issues. Meister stated that he likely Goggled [sic] the congressman’s office number to make the call,” according to Politico.

According to a November court filing, Meister said on the voicemail, “yeah, go f*** your mother, you son of a b**ch, ’cause I’m gonna f***ing blow your brains out you f***ing piece of s*** motherf***er.”

Prosecutors have said that Meister poses a significant flight risk because he doesn’t have many ties to the community. His lawyers argued that “there is little evidence he could have carried out his alleged threat.”

Prosecutors are asking that Jan Peter Meister be kept behind bars pending his trial. In this document, they also revealed he's a registered sex offender and that they plan to charge him with firearms violations "in the very near future." https://t.co/c8B5K36wwK

This is hardly Meister’s first run-in with the law. He’s been convicted twice for sexual offenses involving minors and has been convicted three times for aggravated DUIs. When agents came to his residence to serve a warrant in late October, he allegedly told them “f*** Adam Schiff.”
