‘The View’ Discusses WH Ballroom: ‘Why is There a Bunker?’

US President Donald Trump holds a rendering of the East Wing modernization as he speaks to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, on March 29, 2026. President Donald Trump said March 29 the US military was planning a large complex beneath the new ballroom he is building at the White House. "The military is building a massive complex under the ballroom, and that's under construction, and we're doing very well, so we're ahead of schedule," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, returning to White House after spending the weekend at his Mar-A-Lago residence. The new ballroom currently under construction at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. has the co-hosts of “The View” scratching their heads.

In particular, Sunny Hostin questioned it President Donald Trump is installing a military bunker under the ballroom so to that the president and fellow billionaires can be safe “if something happens.”

The new bunker will replace the “doomsday” bunker that was there from the 1940s.

On Tuesday’s show, Hostin called it “really disconcerting” to think about.

“Why is there a bunker? And are all the billionaires now, if something bad happens, is the plan that all of them are going [in] the bunker?” Hostin asked.

Should the White House bunker under the ballroom be constructed?

Whoopi Goldberg and Sara Haines both said it was “just like ‘Paradise’” — the TV show where 25,000 people live in a bunker following a disaster. Goldberg and Haines grabbed each others hands and started laughing at their simultaneous quips.

Goldberg wasn’t laughing a few minutes earlier when she criticized Trump for putting in the ballroom.

“It’s not your building! You don’t own the building, you can’t just put stuff there!” Goldberg said.

Guest co-host Whitney Cummings said Trump would have been better off “taking a page out of Dwight Eisenhower’s book.” Eisenhower built a bunker in West Virginia around 1960 in case of a nuclear attack. It was not publicly discovered until the early ’90s.

“That is how an adult comports national security issues,” Cummings said.
