As a series of polls show former Vice President Joe Biden (D) holds a commanding lead over President Donald Trump, the president’s allies are warning that he could lose re-election if he does not make some changes.

In an appearance on ABC News’ “This Week” on Sunday, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) said, “[Trump] is losing and if he doesn’t change course, both in terms of the substance of what he is discussing and the way that he approaches the American people, then he will lose.”

“There’s no question that while these national polls are less significant in terms of the raw numbers, the trend is obvious. The trend is moving toward Joe Biden when Joe Biden hasn’t said a word,” he added.

He continued:

“No discredit to the vice president, if you’re winning without doing anything, why do anything? The president has to change course here both in terms of the substance … And secondly, he needs to approach the American people in a different way than he’s been approaching them recently.”

Christie’s comments come as Republican lawmakers have publicly warned Trump that if he does not change his strategy, he may lose re-election, as IJR reported.

Last week, Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) raised concerns about a recent New York Times/Siena College poll that found Trump trailing Biden by double-digits.

“Right now, obviously, Trump has a problem with the middle of the electorate, with independents, and they’re the people who are undecided in national elections,” Thune said.

However, he said he believes Trump has a chance to win those voters back, “I think he can win those back, but it’ll probably require not only a message that deals with substance and policy but, I think, a message that conveys, perhaps, a different tone.”

Speaking about the negative polling numbers, Thune said, “It’s a message that there needs to be a — certainly a change in probably strategy as far as the White House’s messaging is concerned.”

On Sunday, Christie did not rule out the chance of a comeback, “There’s no doubt the president’s an underdog. He’s more of an underdog today than he was a week ago.”

“Now, there’s 128 days left as was said by Nate Silver, and there is still a lot of time to go,” Christie said, adding, “But, there has to be some fundamental changes that need to be made by the president and his team. If they don’t do it, they’re in big trouble.”
