Rep. Val Demings (D-Fl.) is criticizing Republicans for what she believes is a failure to meet the needs of the American people in their proposed coronavirus relief bill.

During her appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Jake Tapper argued the slimmed-down stimulus bill might be better than nothing.

“The American people deserve better than the crumbs from the table, and we will continue to push a relief package that’s meaningful to these families that are struggling,” Demings said.

She claimed Democrats have been negotiating for weeks and there has been “movement” on their side.

Demings accused Republicans of being “ridiculous” in their negotiations.

Tapper pressed her on whether Americans would prefer receiving an additional $200 or $300 a week in enhanced unemployment benefits rather than nothing.

“We see what’s going on with our post office. We’re in a fight to save the most reliable, the most trusted, institution in the history of our nation,” Demings said.

She continued, “Would it make sense to save half of it as opposed to making sure that the American people have a good, efficiently, run and operating full service institution.”

The Senate rejected the Republican bill on Thursday, as IJR previously reported.

The only Republican to oppose the bill was Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

It would have provided around $300 billion in new coronavirus aid, but Democrats are demanding more funding.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) expressed a lack of confidence in passing another relief bill on Friday, as IJR previously reported.

“I wish I could tell you that we were going to get another package, but it doesn’t look that good right now,” McConnell said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), on the other hand, told CNN on Friday she is optimistic coronavirus relief legislation will pass before the November election.
