Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is urging Americans to vote early and reminding them they are in control of the results of the upcoming presidential election.

During a campaign event in Nevada on Friday, Biden told voters President Donald Trump is attempting to undermine confidence in the results of the election.

“He’s trying to scare us. He’s trying to convince everybody there’s ways they can play with the vote and undermine the vote,” Biden said.

He added, “They can’t. If we show up, we win and look what’s happening in early voting all across America, long lines, long lines. We can’t just win, we have to win overwhelmingly so that he can’t be in a position where he can put the phony challenges that he’s talking about.”

According to the United States Elections Project, which compiles early voting data, more than 6.6 million Americans already have voted, as IJR previously reported.

Between 2004 and 2016, the total number of early or mail-in votes more than doubled from nearly 25 million to 57 million.

A national Reuters/Ipsos poll shows 5% of Democrats nationwide reported they had already voted while only 2% of Republicans said they had already voted.

About 58% of Democrats planned on voting early as opposed to 40% of Republicans.

Trump is losing support from older voters, who helped him win the election in 2016, as IJR previously reported.

According to Reuters/Ipsos national surveys in September and October, 47% of voters aged 55 years and older said they are voting for Biden while 46% are supporting Trump.

In a national Reuters/Ipsos poll published this week, 61% of older Americans said they disapprove of Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. A total of 83% expressed concern about the threat of the coronavirus to their own health.

Anxious to return to the campaign trail, Trump will speak to supporters at the White House at an outdoor event on Saturday and hold a rally in Florida on Monday.
