Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) is sharing his thoughts on the Supreme Court’s decision to reject a Texas lawsuit seeking to reverse election results in four states.
“Since Election Night, a lot of people have been confusing voters by spinning Kenyan Birther-type, ‘Chavez rigged the election from the grave’ conspiracy theories, but every American who cares about the rule of law should take comfort that the Supreme Court — including all three of President Trump’s picks — closed the book on the nonsense,” Sasse said in a statement.
The justices said in the order Texas was not legally qualified to bring the claim, as IJR previously reported.
“Texas has not demonstrated a judicially cognizable interest in the manner in which another state conducts its elections,” the court said.
Justice Samuel Alito and Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the court does “not have discretion to deny the filing of a bill of complaint in a case that falls within our original jurisdiction.”
Alito added, “I would therefore grant the motion to file the bill of complaint but would not grant other relief, and I express no view on any other issue.”

Other Republicans shared their frustrations with the lawsuit.
Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) said the lawsuit did not “sound like a very Republican argument,” as IJR previously reported.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) expressed her disappointment with her fellow Republicans for their support of the lawsuit.
“I am really surprised and disappointed that … three days before everything is to be certified that there would be an effort by members, effort by states that are not even impacted in the sense of the challenges,” Murkowski said.
She continued, “That there would be this effort following all of the court rulings that have set aside or disposed of any questions with regard to voting irregularity…So I’m surprised, and I’m even more so, I was really disappointed that this is continuing in this way.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called the efforts to overturn the results a “reckless and fruitless assault on our democracy.”
